Fallen Tree Causes Road Closure on Ponce De Leon Ave. at Atwood Road
A travel advisory was put out on Monday, November 30th, warning of a fallen tree blocking traffic on Ponce De Leon Ave. at Atwood Road. As of 11:00am local time, a traffic diversion was in place for all affected traffic.
Fallen trees represent a traffic hazard that can lead to accidents including vehicles colliding, overturning and jack-knifing in the case of trucks. Diversions are typically put in place to help traffic avoid these hazards where a report has been made to relevant road service departments and law enforcement.
Common Road Hazards
Accidents are often the result of drivers swerving to avoid hazards on the road. Some hazards are easier to identify and avoid than others. Drivers have a responsibility to remain vigilant at all times, and report potentially dangerous objects or scenarios to the proper authorities.
There are several potential hazards drivers may encounter on Atlanta roads. As already mentioned, fallen trees cause an obstruction on the road that is either impassable or causes drivers to swerve in order to avoid the obstruction. Even when there is a diversion in place, accidents can still occur if drivers do not exercise due care and attention.
Animals Crossing
Many of Atlanta’s roads border the habitats of wild animals, such as deer or possum. An animal suddenly darting into traffic can cause vehicles to swerve or break suddenly, creating the potential for a multi-vehicle collision. Serious injuries and even fatalities can result from these accidents.
When driving near animal crossing areas, it is important that drivers slow down and pay attention to surroundings. Animals of all sizes can remain hidden until they reach the edge of woodlands, by which stage it may be too late for drivers to react.
Road Debris
Debris on busy roads represents a hazard to drivers of all kinds of vehicles. From detached vehicle parts to poorly secured truck cargo, debris also comes in different shapes and sizes. There are various laws that prohibit the dropping of debris or unsafe transportation of cargo on Georgia roads.
Depending on the type of debris and location of the road, the city, county or state may hold responsibility for removal. In some instances, a driver could share liability in an accident that involves road debris. If you have been injured in such an accident, you may wish to consult with an experienced personal injury lawyer.
Poor Road Maintenance
Poor road maintenance such as potholes or neglected railings can play a role in accidents. Much like road debris, these issues are the responsibility of varying entities, depending on location. Regardless, you have the right to pursue compensation to cover medical costs, lost earnings or damage to property if involved in an accident caused by poor road maintenance.
The Atlanta State Website provides an online portal for reporting roadway and roadside hazards including potholes and damaged railings. As conscientious citizens, all Georgians should raise the alarm about any issue that may contribute to hazardous conditions on our roads.
