Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in Birmingham
Alabama law requires drivers to yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian in a crosswalk or close enough to the lanes of traffic to be a possible risk.
Conversely, pedestrians are expected to yield the right-of-way to motor vehicles and bicycle riders when they are crossing the street by way of an unmarked crosswalk in an intersection or outside of a marked crosswalk.
An overwhelming portion of pedestrian accidents are caused by driver distraction or by drivers who are not looking for pedestrians. Distracted driving can include activities like eating, texting while driving, and dealing with dashboard equipment. Intoxicated drivers are also a popular source of pedestrian injuries.
