Construction Accident in Newton County Ends in Tragedy
A construction accident on Tuesday, October 19, 2021, in Newton County resulted in three workers plunging into the Yellow River. The incident occurred when a bridge that was being demolished collapsed on Access Road. Sadly, Demario Battle, one of the construction workers involved in the accident, lost his life.
The other two construction workers who fell into the river suffered injuries. Work on the bridge started on Monday of the same week and was scheduled to last nine months. The Georgia Department of Transportation confirmed that B & D Concrete Cutting Inc. was working on the 270-day project. One of four bridge spans was under construction when the tragic accident occurred.
In addition to the victims who fell into the Yellow River, equipment including a truck and excavator plunged into the water. A crane was employed the day following the accident to extract the equipment. This information was confirmed by the Georgia DOT via the department’s Facebook page.
Tragic Construction Accidents
Every year, one out of every 10 construction workers will suffer injuries on the job. This figure, released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, is a stark reminder that some occupations and industries are more dangerous than others.
In many cases, those injured on a construction site will end up with a permanent disability. Unfortunately, some of these accidents will result in fatalities, such as the bridge collapse that occurred on Access Road over the Yellow River.
There are numerous potential hazards on construction sites that could lead to an accident. When the site itself is structurally compromised, walls and floors can collapse without warning. Serious injuries can occur when a worker falls from a great height or is hit by debris.
Other common causes of construction injuries include equipment accidents, chemical inhalation or burns and electrocution. When it comes to establishing liability, the employer may not automatically hold all or any of the blame. Workers can also face obstacles when attempting to claim worker’s compensation due to issues with insurance.
