Fatal Car Crashes in Birmingham
Research conducted by the University of Alabama’s Center for Advanced Public Safety calculated that approximately 1,058 people were killed on Alabama’s highways and roadways in 2016. This total represents a 24.6% rise from the 849 victims who were killed during automobile accidents throughout the state the previous year.
These numbers are both worrying and considerably higher than the nationwide average. In total, vehicular fatalities in the United States increased by 6% in 2016, as published in an article by the New York Times. Despite that 6% signifying one of the largest increases in the past 50 years, it pales in comparison to the increase shown in Alabama’s fatal car accident rate.
